Great stories take work
…because sometimes it’s hard to see the forest through the trees
The Developmental Edit
A developmental (story) edit is an art and a necessary part of powerful storytelling. It goes beyond the basics to critique and enhance your manuscript’s structure thoroughly.
It examines the characters and asks why each one is in the story. It means looking for patterns, finding emotion, and evaluating the structure of scenes, chapters, and word count. It means testing the setting against the plot and so on.
This is an in-depth look into your story. I break my edits down by scene and evaluate each scene against 38 story elements to help my clients create powerful stories that fully engage the reader.
*I typically use the Fictionary software to edit manuscripts.
